PSAT Writing Skills – Improving Sentences

The Improving Sentences questions are one of the three question types of the PSAT Writing Skills section. Out of the 39 questions that include three different question types, 20 questions are Improving Sentences questions; the other two question types being the Identifying Sentence Errors and Improving Paragraphs.

Question Modeling

  • Each question of PSAT sentence improvement presents to you a sentence. A part of this sentence question will be underlined.
  • Obviously, this underlined part of the sentence could contain errors that must be corrected by you.
  • Now, each question will be followed by five different answer options, which apparently provide corrections to the underlined part of the sentence.
  • You should be selecting the correct answer option in order to receive a positive score.
  • Leaving a question unanswered would not affect you in any way; however, marking an incorrect answer option will attract negative marking.

How to Improve Your Skills

Naturally, for the Improving Sentences questions, you should possess competence over  English language usage. You should possess sound knowledge of the basics of language usage in order to answer the questions correctly within the allotted time.Time is the most important factor here as you can observe. The Writing Skills section extends for a total duration of 30 minutes, which means you do not get even a full minute to answer each question appearing in this section of the test.
